Are You Prepared for a Dental Emergency?

As with any medical emergency, the better prepared you are, the more likely you are to experience positive results. Our dentist serving Syossetcan help you if you experience a dental emergency, but your at-home preparation can make all the difference in a successful recovery.

What Do I Need for a Dental Emergency?

A first aid kit for dental emergencies is very similar to a standard first aid kit, but the addition of a few items can help you respond quickly and effectively to issues such as dislodged or broken teeth.

In addition to standard first aid materials, a typical first aid kit for dental emergencies should include:

  • Gauze
  • A small cup to transport dislodged teeth
  • Toothpaste
  • A product to help preserve dislodged teeth

Gauze can be used to stem bleeding inside the mouth. If a tooth is knocked out, you should place it in a small cup filled with milk, water, or a product specially designed to preserve teeth that have been dislodged from the mouth.

If a filling or a crown becomes loose or dislodged, toothpaste makes a good temporary adhesive to hold it in place until you can go to the dentist. There are also over the counter products designed specifically for this purpose.

Responding to a Dental Emergency

Quick action is the best way to ensure a good result and complete recovery after a dental injury. In the case of cuts or lacerations on the inside of the mouth, quick reaction will help slow or stop the bleeding while you take the injured person to the dentist or to an emergency room. Also, the sooner a knocked out tooth is recovered and placed in an appropriate solution, the more likely it is that your dentist will be able to successfully restore it to its proper place.

In any dental emergency, it is important also to see a dentist as quickly as possible. Even if an emergency room or doctor is able to help the immediate problem, a dentist can evaluate your mouth and teeth to see if teeth have been damaged or pushed out of position.
