Dental Implants: A Great Investment for Your Health

When we lose a tooth, we typically have several options to choose from to replace it; we can choose dentures, a dental bridge, or to have dental implants placed by an implant dentist.

While all three methods can restore a smile back to its former glory, the impact on a patient’s health can differ depending to the treatment chosen. An implant dentist can help ensure the right treatment is taken to suit the patient’s circumstances.

Dental implants also provide support to surrounding teeth, preventing shifting and maintaining the mouth’s structure almost as if there was no tooth loss to begin with.

For instance, a denture may only return around 20% of the patient’s chewing force, can irritate the patient’s mouth and become ill-fitting over time as dentures can’t fully support the surrounding teeth. Dentures also require regular cleaning, and are quite fragile if handled incorrectly.

Bridge treatment, on the other hand, is sturdier than denture treatment. However, bridge treatment can lead to food and debris becoming trapped within the mouth; over time this debris begins to rot, which can eat away at tooth enamel and cause further problems if not kept clean.

Dental implants result in little loss of chewing force compared to real teeth and when fitted look just like the real thing. Dental implants also provide support to surrounding teeth, preventing shifting and maintaining the mouth’s structure almost as if there was no tooth loss to begin with.

The treatment involved in having dental implants takes longer to administer than other methods. An implant dentist places a small titanium support directly into the jawbone. Over time, this support will graft to the patient’s jawbone before the dentist fits a crown over the support, restoring the patient’s smile back to its former glory.

The results of dental implants are impressive; not only will the patient preserve their smile and their bite, but they will also build confidence in their self, knowing their smile is as good as it can be.

Plus the patient retains most of the functions of their mouth that would otherwise be lost – or greatly reduced – through other treatments, such as improved comfort; taste restoration; speech retention and an overall betterment of the patient’s oral health.
